Alton is a market town of around 18,000 people set in the rolling Hampshire countryside. It is surrounded by a number of satellite villages, bringing the total population nearer to 34,000 people. In the past the area was known for its hop-growing and beer-making, along with its cattle market and fairs. Whilst Molson Coors continue to brew in town, much of the local economy is now made of up of services and light industry.
The town has a considerable commercial district and a town centre made up of a good mix of chain stores and independent retailers, pubs, take-aways, cafes and restaurants. Farming is still a major part of our local economy, but the link between town and country has been lost. Never the less, there is a monthly Farmers’ Market (2nd Saturday) and a weekly Tuesday market.
