Tourism also plays a part in the local economy, and with the opening of the nearby South Downs National Park, we have good reason to further develop this area of the town’s activity. We are fortunate to have the Mid-Hants Railway, better-known as the Watercress Line, running steam trains from Alton to Alresford – a ten-mile journey.

We also have the former home of Jane Austen on our doorstep in the village of Chawton, along with her brother’s manor house, now called Chawton House Library. Jane Austen’s House Museum attracts 30,000+ people each year and it is our aim to do more to encourage more people to visit Alton as they pass through.

Further away is Birdworld, Lasham Gliding Club and Alice Holt Forest, a local beauty spot.
